February 13, 2012: Casey Middle School honored as a “2011 Best Projects”

The Casey Middle School project was featured in Engineering News-Record, a McGraw-Hill Publication, in the February 13, 2012 issue as being recognized for being “Best of the Best” nation-wide project. The “2011 Best of the Best in the Country” competition honors construction and design excellence of the past year across the U.S.

The 21 projects were selected from over 700 entries as outstanding achievements in construction within the U.S. for 2011. Independent industry judges chose winners in 18 categories based on design and construction excellence, teamwork, safety and contribution to the community. In addition, ENR’s editorial staff chose one special project as the Editors’ Choice to represent the pinnacle of design and construction excellence.

A panel of 17 industry judges from across the U.S. and all walks of construction and design expertise reviewed 119 projects, scoring each on criteria such as innovation, community contribution, teamwork, safety and design and construction excellence. The panel then met to argue the merits of each project and determine the final 21 winning projects.

This was ENR’s 4th year for the national award competition.

Casey Middle School won the “K-12 Education” Category. Casey Middle School is a $26.5-million facility, the first Colorado school to seek LEED-Platinum. It features geothermal and solar power, a zero-waste cafeteria, many recycled materials and, for the new facade, two exterior walls salvaged from the original 1924 school. The 107,000-sq-ft building includes 34 classrooms for 600 students and solar panels that shelter the bicycle racks. The original gym wood flooring was repurposed for use as interior paneling. More than half of the demolition and landscape debris was recycled or composted, and 84% of construction waste was kept out of the landfill.
